The Stranger in the Doorway: A Lesson in Trusting My Gut

They say you should never judge a book by its cover, but sometimes, you have to read the energy in the room.

It started out as a normal day at the shop. A man walked in, he looked like a typical workman, dressed in tattered clothes and began browsing. He eventually settled on a bag, and when I told him the price was 10k, he gave a casual "OK" and mentioned he’d be back later.

Standard enough, right? I thought so too. I went back to my seat, settled in, and pulled up The Vampire Diaries to pass the time.

But then, the atmosphere shifted.

I looked up and realized the man hadn't actually left. He was standing there, right in the entrance, just staring at me. He didn’t say a word. He didn’t move. He just watched me for ten solid minutes.

The silence felt heavy. My "internal alarm" started screaming that something wasn't right. Staying calm but moving quickly, I scanned the shop for anything I could use to defend myself if things turned south. My eyes landed on a pair of scissors.

I didn't hesitate. I picked them up and held them firmly, making it clear I was aware of him and I wasn't unprotected. The second he saw the scissors in my hand, his demeanor changed. He didn't say a word. he just turned around and vanished.

It’s a chilling reminder: no matter how "normal" a situation seems, never ignore that prickle on the back of your neck. Your intuition is your best tool and sometimes, a pair of scissors helps, too.
