Igburukwu and the Forest Spirit

Ekemma and the River of Wonders is a traditional African folktale about two co-wives, Ugoye and Ekemma. Out of jealousy, Ugoye sends Ekemma on a dangerous journey to fetch water from the forbidden Ogbozuluoba River. Along the way, Ekemma’s kindness, humility, and songs earn her the favor of magical creatures and the river goddess, who rewards her with wealth and blessings. When Ugoye tries to imitate her out of greed, her arrogance and envy bring her misfortune instead.

Moral: Jealousy and greed lead to destruction, while humility and goodness bring blessings.
